“JIVA”: The Life of REL’s Ogan Plant

In today’s world, the scarcity of water makes it an extremely vital resource. It is the basic and most essential need for life that is significantly threatened by population growth and climate change. This requires every company to follow a sustainable and more environmentally friendly approach in its business.

At REL, sustainability is not treated as just another initiative, but as a responsibility. We understand the critical importance of water stewardship in safeguarding the precious resource for the generations to come. With the growth in manufacturing, our commitment towards the environment and the communities also grows.

Therefore, by closing the loop on water usage, we not only conserve the invaluable resource but also uphold our responsibility to the natural resources and local communities. At the forefront of these water stewardship efforts lies ‘JIVA’, a water reservoir that reflects our core belief towards sustainability.

What is ‘JIVA’?

JIVA in Sanskrit means ‘life’. It is more than a water reservoir; it is a source of water meticulously designed to meet our operational needs by harvesting rainwater of nearly 40 crore litres storage capacity, which can suffice the needs of our operations for 1.5+ years at its full capacity.

Built outside the boundary walls of REL’s Ogan manufacturing unit, it is a living ecosystem created to support environmental balance and local livelihoods. Furthermore, it is constructed with the latest in water conservation technology, representing our commitment to achieving self-sufficiency and zero dependency on external water resources.

JIVA’s rainwater harvesting at 100% potential harvesting capacity of 37.5 crore litres can lead the way towards a Water Neutral Journey. The Zero Liquid Discharge facility ensures no wastewater leaves the facility untreated. Significantly, the presence of advanced treatment technologies at our Effluent Treatment Plant of 4.02 MLD capacity enables the wastewater to convert into distilled water, which is further utilised in our operations.

Additionally, our treatment technology for water recovery is automated with an energy-efficient evaporation and concentration process with a smaller footprint that meets all the compliance requirements. This closed-loop system helps in minimising our environmental impact and reduces the usage of chemicals and dyes in our products, aligning with our commitment to sustainable practices.

Impact of JIVA

Replenishing Ground Water

JIVA actively contributes to replenishing groundwater reserves in the region, which helps in increasing the local water table, preventing soil erosion, and nourishing the land, flora, and fauna that thrive in its vicinity.

The Birds Adobe

Located approximately 20 km from Nalsarovar, JIVA is a natural home to indigenous and migratory birds. Over time, 25-30 such species of birds have been observed at the reservoir.

A Farmer’s Blessing

For farmers living around the REL Plant, JIVA serves as a reliable water source, helping them meet their agricultural needs, especially during challenging periods.

Wrapping Up

JIVA not only quenches the thirst of our manufacturing processes but also breathes life into the surrounding ecosystem.
